This fictional book is great for discussions of politics, religion, and life. You know - those things you aren't supposed to talk to anybody about to keep the peace?

Do we all exist in Heaven before becoming human? Is our life on Earth a test to see if we then get to spend Eternity with God? Does evil exist? Do evil spirits exist? What does it mean to be Christian in the year 2012 and beyond? Is God even in control? These questions and many more are answered in the pages of Broken Pottery.

Janice Thresher is the typical middle class suburban teen of the 1980's. Living near Pittsburgh, PA, she follows her high school sweetheart off to Penn State where he proceeds to dump her. She copes with her loss by partying heavily until God brings a new love into her life. In a cruel twist of fate, this love was not meant to last either.

On the other side of the country in Southern California, Sophie Ulsrey, a girl several years younger than Janice, spends her time trying to hide ugly scars sustained after a terrible auto accident in which she lost her father. The accident, and her mother's reaction to it, drives Sophie to achieve wealth and fame as she becomes an adult.

As adults, the lives of Janice and Sophie divinely intersect in time to warn fellow Americans of a government cover-up to hide important factual information with apocalyptic national security implications. Just as it was in 1938 when an American radio audience believed Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" broadcast to be truth instead of fiction, many readers of Broken Pottery will be tempted to check their cell phones and digital libraries just to make sure they, too, are reading only a book of fiction.

Broken Pottery takes you on a suspenseful adventure through the years 1965-2020, taking on the real difficulties we all have in life, dramatizes them, and provides a considered, thoughtful view of how we tackle them. 21 Study questions for self-reflection or group study are included. Below is an example of three of them

2. Does God want us to question our beliefs?

9. Do you believe there are both heavenly and demonic forces at work in your life and in the lives of all of us?

17. Do you believe that the "ends justify the means?" Who gets to decide which "ends" are important enough that the "means" are justified? Why?

This could have been a great book. There were great plot elements, great scriptural principles. But the writing was bad, bad, bad. The plot leaps were confusing. The characters were shallow, in writing, not in who they were. At all times the book was preachy. The prologue was long, boring, and dry. At times the book came across as self-righteous. One of the basic premises of the book was that the daily choices we make can have a significant impact on the Kingdom of God, even a friendly smile can make a difference in someone's life. That is true and worth remembering. Another concept is that God is in control and an bring good out of bad things. But I would never ever recommend this book to anyone. It is so badly written that it is not a good representation of Christ., I would suggest the author find a co-writer or ghost writer or content editor. Then she might be able to write a decent book. As it is, I am sad that this great message was so badly executed.

Broken Pottery edition by Joan K Smith Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

What's with the language? Using God's name in vain? I do not believe we have to resort to cursing to get a point across. As a writer I would think Ms. Smith could do better. I will not recommend this book.
Christian fiction, would be good for a reading group. Follows the lives of three women...with "commentaries" from demons or angels. It was interesting, good characters. Good points for discussion.
It was a very good book loved the story line. Loved that it was a Christian book and it really mass you think about your relationship with God.
Overall, this book has a good message but I really struggled with the way it was delivered. I read Christian books so I don't have to read books with bad language and sex. I had a really hard time with reading the Lord's name taken in vain. I don't think a true Christian book should have that in it at all. There was some language in this book that could have been left out but it wasn't as offensive to me as the other. The book was long and drawn out and I almost quit reading it several times. There were times that it was choppy. Although I do agree with the message that was given, I would have a hard time recommending this book.
I finished this book only because I wanted to see if it finished as crazy as it began. I have read thousands of books both Christian and secular and could not decide where this one fit. If this was meant to be a Christian book then the cuss words were inappropriate and offensive. I chose this rating because the story line was all over the place until about 3/4 the way through and the time lime springing months ahead sometimes with each paragraph was irritating.
I almost put this book down because, as others have reviewed, it is not cohesive and there were points where I found it confusing. I also didn't care for the chapters about before the people were born and afterwards... too speculative and the story would have been just fine without them.

However, I kept reading and found it very interesting how the different storylines are brought together towards the end of the book. Fans of "End Times" stories should stick with the book and I think would enjoy the story as I did.
Three stars to keep it neutral. I cannot judge her writing. I did not read the book. In the first paragraph it became clear that it is from a different faith perspective than mine (maybe Mormon?) and I just am not interested. It may or may not be a good book, but I am completing the review to let people know, this is not a 'Christian' book. It is obviously a 'faith' based book.
